Wayne State University is searching for an experiencedAssociate Director, Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rightsat its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

Provides strategic, operational, and financial leadership for the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights. Reports to the Faculty Director, Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights.

Manages the program’s budget and maintains transparency of the program’s income and expenses for Wayne State Law and Wayne State University as well as the Faculty and External Advisory Boards.

Expands the program’s content and funding. In collaboration with th Law School and University development officers, leads fundraising efforts for the program.

Manages the Keith Center annual expenditure budget. Develops revenue and expense projections, approves expenditures for the program and monitors transactions for compliance with university policies and procedures.

Develops programs targeted to Keith Center growth and issue-based impact, including large signature events academic programs, and conferences.

Collaborate with the Journal of Law in Society and ensuring that all programs operate consistently and ethically within the Law School’s, Wayne State University’s and the Damon J. Keith Center for Civil Rights’ mission, vision, and values.

Develops new web-based content highlighting the work of the Keith Center and exploring issues related to civil rights, African American History, the Keith Collection of African American Legal History, spatial- structural racism, social movements, and Movement Lawyering.

Maintains strong working relationships with the Faculty Director of the Keith Center, the Director of the Detroit Equity Action Lab, Wayne State Law School Dean, faculty, and students to facilitate meaningful involvement in the work of the program, including mission related student groups (Keith Scholars, BLSA, NLG and ACLU among others).

Works with the leadership to meet the Program’s goals. Maintains strong relationships with Keith Center external stakeholders, Serves as representative of the Keith Center by interacting with donors, internal and external advisory boards, and community leaders.

Develops a new concentration in Movement Lawyering as a bridge between the Keith Center’s internal and external missions, collaborating with internal and external Keith Center stakeholders.

Provides overall leadership and direction to staff. Sets expectations & focus, assigns duties, delegates ‎‎responsibilities, evaluates activities, prepares performance ‎appraisals & professional development plans. Provides coaching, mentoring and teaching. Manages the ‎‎administrative process for assigned staff including hiring, ‎promotions, terminations, disciplinary procedures, and ‎and salary ‎‎adjustments. Provides ongoing performance feedback, goal setting, and development plans for staff. ‎‎‎Plans for future staffing needs. Provides timely communications to staff.

Conducts statistical and qualitative analysis of program’s outcomes and performance; identifies areas of opportunities and recommends solutions.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education Bachelor's degree

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business, public administration or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted, including work in community organizing. Advanced degree (JD, MBA, MA) preferred.

Experience Expert (established subject matter expert, 7+ years experience)

Seven years progressive experience in managing legal projects or social programs required. Experience in urban, legal, nonprofit sector preferred. Experience in budgeting and financial management required. Experience in a leadership role required.

Able to set priorities, monitor progress toward goals, and drive strategies to move organization forward.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work successfully with diverse groups of students, faculty, staff, and outside parties. Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills including strong public speaking ability. Capable of keeping multiple parties informed of Center’s decision making and activities.

Knowledge of the law, legal systems and legislative process strongly preferred.

Ability to develop and execute short and long-term strategies and goals. Demonstrated capabilities managing longer-term projects, multiple priorities and timelines to meet organizational objectives. Understands mission and strategic objectives of the Keith Center, law school and the University to ensure solution alignment. Performance-driven, proactive, results-oriented; comfortable and flexible with changing priorities, high levels of ambiguity and non-routine issues; comfortable actively seeking out input and partnering with individuals and groups of all levels.

Familiarity with budget process and ability to prepare standard financial statements, reports and analyses.

Ability to plan, develop, and implement fundraising strategies. Familiar with policies and procedures for comprehensive campaigns.

Understanding of and experience working in the field of racial equity. Familiarity and competence in implementing programs addressing structural racism and anti-blackness. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in multi-racial coalitions.

Ability to work in a fast-paced, student-focused environment that often requires the ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities.
