Description of Job

The Colorado Community College System (CCCS) is hiring a Deputy Controller to join our System Office Finance team. This role participates in strategic planning and implementation of valuable initiatives that are designed to improve the community college student experience from a financial perspective. You will be collaborating with cross-functional decision-making groups and facilitating communications as it relates to fiscal needs with the colleges’ and System Office’s accounting departments. You will also supervise three employees. We are looking for someone who has the ability to look at things with a macro-level perspective, who can effectively evaluate risk. Duties Include:

  • Provides system leadership to college controllers and other related staff and assists in the oversight of the preparation of consolidated financial statements for the System.

  • Assists individual community college controllers with technical accounting, reporting, operating, internal control issues, and troubleshooting.

  • Assists in financial operations for the System Office, as well as community colleges, collaborating in the development of system-wide accounting operating procedures.

  • Develops understanding of cost accounting and financial reporting structures and gathers information regarding the colleges’ current fiscal organization, identifying common data elements and controls for developing training, guidance, and best practices system-wide and setting standard fiscal policy.

  • Provides trainings for monthly monitoring items and year-end close (footnotes, financial statements, related charts and graphs).

  • Serves as primary contact for external and internal auditors and provides integral assistance in supervision of preparation of consolidated financial statements for System, coordinating the year-end closing calendar and tasks.

  • Partners with the Chief Accountant and System Controller on technical system and accounting components on the implementation of the System ERP to ensure consistency and standardization of financial reporting practices.

  • Identifies areas of improvement related to fiscal needs and risks by talking to colleges, working with vendors, coordinating with IT, and implementing new systems as needed while ensuring integrity of the financial data for end users.

  • Leads and maintains an in-depth level of understanding to assist in developing and prioritizing reports/analytics (Banner, COGNOS, and Colorado Operations Resource Engine (CORE)), and other monitoring tools over fiscal data.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may substitute for the degree.

  • Three years of progressive professional accounting/auditing experience and working with cross-functional teams.

Supplemental Information

Attributes that will contribute to success in this position:

  • Experience in an audit firm preferred but not required for the role.

  • CPA license preferred but not required for the role.

  • Practiced working with cross-functional teams.

  • Knowledge of general, government, and higher education accounting principles/practices, federal and state grants, financial reporting skills, and working knowledge of GAAP.

  • Practiced in applying process management techniques to accounting operations.

  • Critical thinking, judgment and decision making – ability to consider relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate steps to be taken.

  • Advanced written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to perform complicated and detailed quantitative and qualitative analysis.

  • Strong organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.

  • Stress Tolerance – job requires calmly and effectively addressing high stress situations.

  • Concern for Others – job requires being sensitive to others' needs and feelings and being understanding and helpful.

Work Location/Travel Expectations:

  • This position is located at 9101 E Lowry Blvd, Denver, CO 80230.

  • Moderate in-state travel required, some to rural colleges that may require overnight stays; occasional out-of-state travel for conferences.

  • Alternative work arrangements, including flexible schedules and remote work may be available. All work must be completed in the state of Colorado.
