Description

The College of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts (PVFA) at Texas A&M University invites applications for one (1) tenure-track assistant professor position in Music, specializing in InterArts Piano Performance with a nine-month academic appointment beginning in Fall 2025. Building an arts powerhouse, the new college brings music together with dance, performance studies, theater, and visual arts, as well as creative computing and game design. Aiming at fully capitalizing on this vibrant atmosphere, the school seeks an individual with expertise in at least one of the following areas:

  • Music and Theater

  • Music and Dance

  • Music and Visual Arts (e.g., sound art, sound installations)

  • Music and Film

  • Music and Gaming

    Within the college, the Dance, Music, and Theater Performance Section (DMTP) seeks an individual who demonstrates expertise in piano performance with experience in

  • Western art music

  • popular music,

  • jazz, folk

  • non-Western music practices.

    Preference will be given to candidates who teach and perform in a variety of styles and genres. Candidates who teach courses on the historical and cultural contexts of piano-based performance practices are particularly encouraged to apply.

    Responsibilities: Candidates should be able to teach piano at the undergraduate level in the new BFA in Music Performance. The successful applicant will also contribute to developing courses and performance-based projects in at least one of the areas listed above.

    The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain competitive research activities, teach undergraduate courses in piano performance, develop and implement curriculum pertaining to PVFA programs, particularly in interdisciplinary performance, and contribute to academic service. Tenure-track faculty are expected to gain national visibility, e.g., through peer-reviewed academic research publications or juried creative works. Preference will be given to faculty members who demonstrate the ability to pursue external funding to support their work.

    About the College: The College of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts is a College within the Texas A&M University System and has a diverse and dynamic mission with nearly 100 faculty and more than 30 staff members and a projected exponential growth in the next 5 years. The College was formed from three departments/programs spread across the university: the Department of Visualization, the Department of Performance Studies, and the Dance Science Program. The mission of PVFA places a heavy emphasis on faculty and student collaboration and interdisciplinary work in both scholarly and creative research. Texas A&M University leadership has charged the College with developing innovative research and creative works, public performances, and degree offerings at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels that build upon our strength in merging art and science, as well as the traditional fields of music, dance, art, and theater.     Qualifications

    Candidates must hold a DMA, PhD, or comparable terminal degree (DM, MFA, MM, MMus, MMA) in music performance or a related field by the appointment start date. A strong commitment to effective teaching, student recruitment, committee service, and professional development is required. The successful candidate must have a well-developed research agenda that will inform and advance current trends in the field. Preference will be given to individuals with university teaching experience and a background in interdisciplinary performing arts projects.
