POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, the Social Sciences Research Assistant 1 will perform research activities in the Speech and Auditory Research laboratory and support the management and coordination of the Innovative Mentoring through Professional Advancement and Cultural Training (IMPACT) program. The research assistant will be responsible for research participation recruitment and scheduling, data collection, management, organization of research data, supervising undergraduate research assistants, and the administration of audiological examination and other audiological testing. The research assistant will also be responsible for communicating with IMPACT Fellows, scheduling and planning IMPACT events, making orders and purchases for IMPACT, providing managerial support for the IMPACT SLACK channel, the IMPACT web app for experience hour logging, and the IMPACT Canvas course. This is a one year term position.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Recruit and schedule research participants with hearing loss and normal hearing. Assist with testing participants who may include both children and adults. (20%)
  2. Assist with data management. Collect and prepare data for analysis. Organize and maintain recorded stimuli database. (20%)
  3. Assist with IMPACT program management including interaction with student fellows, and event planning. (20%)
  4. Provide managerial support for IMPACT program communication channels including SLACK, Canvas, and the custom IMPACT web-app. (20%)
  5. Assist with the preparation of presentations and publications including performing literature searches related to projects and teaching materials. Research articles relevant to projects. Utilize library services to obtain materials. (6%)

     

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Assist with recruiting, interviewing, and training undergraduate and graduate research assistants. (4%)
  2. Maintain and organize records from IMPACT activities. (4%)
  3. Support the organization and maintenance of research lab to ensure it is prepared for participants and in good condition to conduct research studies. (4%)
  4. Perform other duties as assigned. (2%)

     

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research, IMPACT, and maintain workflow. Moderate contact with department staff for student hiring, ordering, student building access, etc.

University: Limited or no contact with other departments to share information. Occasional contact with the Institutional Review Board staff and other supports on campus (e.g., ThinkBox, RedCAP, etc.).

External: Moderate contact with community to recruit research subjects. Moderate contact with external research and IMPACT collaborators. Occasional contact with vendors for ordering and troubleshooting equipment challenges.

Students: Continuous contact with undergraduate and graduate student research assistants and IMPACT Fellows to exchange information.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. The position does include supervision of undergraduate and graduate student research assistants.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in Communication Sciences from an appropriate accredited institution and 0 to 1 year of experience required. Prior experience with participant recruitment for research studies, data entry, and data management preferred. Coursework completed in audiology, phonetics, and linguistics preferred.
