Case Western Reserve University Research Assistant 1 in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Working under moderate supervision, Research Assistant 1 will perform research work in biomedical, molecular biology, cell biology, and related technologies. This position supports ongoing research in the laboratory toward understanding opioid regulation of immunity, gastrointestinal side effects, and brain function.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

  1. Perform research work in biomedical, molecular biology, and cell biology and their related techniques which requires the use of lab skills in these areas. (57%) 
  2. Conduct analysis of samples, which may include quantifying band intensity on western blot analyses and T cell isolation and growth. (15%)
  3. Maintain records of experiments, procedures; and record results of experiments in hard bound lab notebook, or computer-based notebook. (13%)
  4. Maintain test equipment utilized in experiments. Maintain a safe, efficient, clean, and organized work environment for all researchers in the lab, participating in laboratory chores and on the outlook for reagents that need replacement. (12%)

     

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

Perform other duties as assigned, associated with lab safety or helping other scientists learn a technique. (3%)

 

CONTACTS 

Department: Daily contact with supervisor to discuss research and maintain workflow. Frequent contact with students and research staff in the lab. Infrequent contact with administrative staff regarding personnel, research, or purchasing issues.

University: Moderate contact with other scientists within the department and scientists in collaborating labs. Occasional contact with other departments to share information.

External: Moderate contact with vendors to exchange information.

Students: Frequent contact with students and researchers to exchange information, learn technology, or help with experimentation.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY 

This position has no direct supervision of staff employees.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Bachelor¿s degree in science and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience required.

 

REQUIRED SKILLS 

  1. Has knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the molecular and cell biology fields. 
  2. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. 
  3. Ability to operate laboratory equipment.
  4. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  5. Ability to interact with colleagues, students, and supervisors face to face.

     

WORKING CONDITIONS

Applicant will be working indoors in a research laboratory, that includes a biochemistry and molecular biology room and a dedicated cell culture room, studying human cell lines and primary cultures of human cells from participants. General laboratory environment and equipment knowledge is needed. Will have exposure to hazards, including opioids, where full safety training will be provided. Personal protective equipment, including lab coat, gloves and goggles, will be provided to limit exposure to hazards.
