Environmental Protection Agency Physical Science Technician in Cincinnati, Ohio

Summary This position is in the Office of Research and Development, Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response, Research Planning and Implementation Staff. About: The Office of Research and Development (ORD) This is an office-centered position*--you must physically report to the duty station stated in this announcement on a regular basis. *EPA offers work-from-home and work schedule flexibilities as described in the Benefits section. Responsibilities At the entry level of this position you will: Analyze samples by performing standardization checks, make operational adjustments using scientific measurement instruments. Identify the functioning characteristics of equipment, make adjustments as needed. Use applicable systems to record analyses and document procedures. When entering a Federal job at a grade level lower than the highest promotion potential level, you may be promoted to more complex duties and work more independently, as your career progresses. NOTE: Career ladder promotions are not automatic, and all eligibility and qualifications requirements must be met in order to progress to the next grade level. One or more positions may be filled (in the organization advertised and/or in other organizations), if appropriate to the position. Requirements Conditions of Employment You must be a U.S. citizen. You must submit a resume and required documents--see How to Apply section. You will be required to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds. You may have limited exposure to hazardous materials. This position is designated as Low Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation. All conditions of the pre-employment security process must be met before an official letter of employment can be issued with a report for duty date. If you are selected, you may be required to complete a one-year probationary period. This position requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). You will be required to meet ongoing specialized safety training requirements in order to meet field safety standards. #LI-Onsite Qualifications NOTE: You must meet qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement. To qualify for the GS-04 level, you need to have (1) at least six months of general experience defined as any type of work that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of this position AND (2) six months of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-03 level defined as operating or maintaining equipment in a laboratory setting; and reporting scientific findings in written documentation; - OR two years of education above high school that includes at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics; - OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. To qualify for the GS-05 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-04 level defined as conducting scientific data testing and/or operations using laboratory equipment/instruments; and utilizing software programs to record analyses/complete scientific assignments; - OR four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in a field of physical science, or (b) that includes at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics; - OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: Ability to analyze laboratory samples. Knowledge of scientific measurement instruments. Ability to operate laboratory equipment. Ability to prepare samples for analyses. Skill in written communication. Ability to interpret written technical and procedural resources. Knowledge of standard data collection processes.
