Job Description

The Medical Director:

The Medical Director shares responsibility with the PMC Administrative Leader for planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating operations including clinical program development, managing patient volumes and the annual budget. As a member of the SRAlab Leadership Team, collaborates with leaders and staff in other SRAlab Programs to facilitate achievement of overall organization goals.

Unique to the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Pain Management Center (PMC) is the intervention of a multi-disciplinary pain management team incorporating the biopsychosocial model of the care in the treatment of chronic pain. The Medical Director will join a dedicated Team providing care to a diverse population of patients with acute, subacute and chronic pain.

The Medical Director, PMC is accountable for meeting established standards for overall quality, patient care practices, budgetary performance, and regulatory compliance. This responsibility includes oversight of the PMC physicians and with the administrative leader, the clinical team. The Medical Director, PMC also functions as an SRAlab attending physician.

Team members include nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and psychology. Treatment modalities include medication management, exercise, biofeedback, and associated pain management techniques. Physicians in the PMC are responsible for evaluating patients for entry into the Program and ongoing oversight. With added emphasis on acute and subacute pain the Attending Physician will also be expected to see increasing numbers of these patients employing all appropriate modalities including medication management, physical and occupational therapy, and injection therapy, as appropriate.

Clinical responsibilities for physicians in the PMC include clinics at Shirly Ryan AbilityLab (SRAlab) with one to two days of procedures as needed and as referrals grow. In addition, physicians in the PMC will have a faculty appointment at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine with educational responsibilities that include teaching of core Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residents and Fellows in the Northwestern Pain Fellowship Program.

PRACTICING PHYSICIAN:

  • Collaborates with leaders and staff in other Institute Programs to facilitate achievement of overall Institute goals.
  • Serves as a practicing physician and provides medical leadership to the interdisciplinary team.
  • In the role of a practicing Physician, ensures the appropriateness and effectiveness of the treatment plan. Oversees and coordinates the involvement of physicians, nursing and allied health staff to resolve complex medical problems.
  • Actively participates in assigned medical staff committees including providing leadership by functioning as chairperson as appropriate.
  • Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.

Reporting Relationships

Reports directly to Chief Medical Officer and Chief Clinical Operating Officer.
