Universal Health Services MAINTENANCE WORKER in CHICAGO, Illinois

Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY: The Maintenance Worker performs a variety of tasks involving carpentry, painting, dry wall repair, and installations. The Maintenance Worker will also conduct corrective and preventive maintenance with minimal supervision. Prioritize maintenance requests and projects to ensure patient, staff and visitor safety and comfort at all times.

Performs duties while maintaining good service excellence/recovery skills at all times.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description. The specifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability to meet the minimum requirements for this position. The Maintenance Worker - Skilled must demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of the hospital.

Education: Trade school degree preferred; High School diploma required.

Experience: A minimum of 2-3 years experience in plant, building, equipment and utility maintenance with at least one year working in an institutional, commercial or industrial setting. Must have experience in operating a variety of hand/power tools and equipment. Must know how to operate and read an electrical volt/amp meter and understand and interpret volts, amps and ohms in troubleshooting and repairing electrical systems and components.

Licensure/Certification: Valid in state driver’s license required. Ability to work toward an IL Stationary Engineer License.

Language Requirements: Ability to speak fluent English. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and policy/procedure manuals. Ability to write reports, correspondence, technical terminologies, and assist in proposals.

Knowledge: Knowledge of regulatory agency and environment of care standards, mechanical and leadership skills. Knowledge of basic local building codes, NFPA and OSHA standards. Experience and familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS).

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as measurements for area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Elementary use of computer software programs.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several concrete and abstract variables. Ability to think and act quickly and calmly in an emergency situation and make independent decisions.

Environmental Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals; wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions; moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles; risk of electrical shock; and risk of vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job the employee may be exposed to patients who may exhibit inappropriate behaviors and potentially assaultive or self-destructive behaviors.

Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; sit; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; talk and hear; and taste and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distant, and peripheral vision, color and depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee may occasionally be required to physically restrain clients, using authorized restraint procedures as a last resort for protection of client, staff and self.
