We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a IT Director Application Development on our Information Technology team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 2 days a week in the office.

As a IT Director Application Development, you will direct team(s) to consistently deliver effective technology solutions to support product owners across all business units in meeting AMA business and mission objectives. Partner with assigned business product owner(s) in developing, maintaining, and supporting critical business applications of varying complexity within budget and delivery schedule while meeting quality standards related to stability, performance, usability, and security. Lead prioritization of enhancements and the development of multiyear roadmaps – that deliver material and lasting value. Manage, develop, and mentor staff to ensure optimal performance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Software and Application Development and Delivery Management

  • Develop and implement systems, processes, procedures, and metrics to ensure effective delivery of solutions using well-defined project delivery methods and software evolution strategies.

  • Oversee development of detailed project plans supporting product roadmaps and provide oversight and management of activities to meet functional, budget, and time commitments.

  • Manage third-party relationships, including contract negotiations and deliverables management.

    Software Strategy and Planning

  • Establish an effective organization to allow for the successful execution of the software strategy across the enterprise.

  • Effectively align software strategy with the needs of the individual business units while maintaining a sound architectural roadmap for each ecosystem.

  • Create, implement, and maintain a continuous improvement plan for software development and IT infrastructure.

  • Research the external environment and, where appropriate, identify and recommend external partners for the delivery of best-in-class technologies suitable for the defined enterprise needs.

  • Identify and implement technology trends that will be able to support the future success of the business

    Staff Management

  • Ensure high-quality talent, bench strength, and succession planning through best practices in recruiting, selection, training, developing, and retaining IT professional staff.

  • Foster a strong customer service mindset throughout the team, while championing thought leadership and partnership with the business.

  • Evaluate team members' performance, provide candid feedback, and provide high-impact coaching that enables and motivates them to achieve departmental and enterprise goals.

  • Plan capacity and determine staffing requirements and hire and train new staff.

  • Set goals and monitor performance, develop staff to maximize potential.

    May include other responsibilities as assigned

    REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Minimum 10 years of experience in IT Software Delivery management roles.

    2. Minimum 8 years of experience managing projects and people. Strong experience needed in managing all facets of solution development. Experience with resource allocation management and modeling required.

    3. Minimum 5 years of experience in vendor management, coordinating negotiation and managing contract review, budget approval, evaluating technologies, authoring Requests for Proposals, and managing and evaluating contract staff.

    4. Demonstrated experience as leader of complex matrixed programs with multiple projects, direct reports, partnerships, and accountability for product outcomes.

    5. Demonstrated experience working with an enterprise Content Management System (CMS) at both a tactical and strategic level. An understanding of Drupal is a strong plus.

    6. Comprehensive knowledge of Jira is required. Understanding Jira in the Cloud is a plus.

    7. Proven track record in enterprise software development and delivery, with a bias toward team building and collaboration, strong technical knowledge and understanding, and a passion for innovation.

    8. Strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience presenting in large group settings; publication record a plus.

    9. Ability to coach, mentor, and provide constructive feedback to develop talent.

    10. Ability to express complex technical concepts verbally and in writing effectively to both technical and non-technical groups. The ability to target the most effective communication methods to the intended audience. Ability to successfully facilitate groups to reach consensus and make decisions.

    11. Able to operate effectively in a federated environment to lead internal colleagues, external resources/partners, and other stakeholders to identify and maximize opportunities to apply technologies to create and maintain the optimal user experience, build the value of the brand, and support business strategies and the organization’s mission.

    12. Ability to quickly learn the business areas supported and identify solutions that utilize technology most effectively. Experience researching and proposing buy versus build strategies.

    13. Proficient at effectively managing vendors, negotiating and managing contracts, evaluating technology, and authoring Requests for Proposals. Experience with departmental budgeting.
