State of Massachusetts Occupational Therapist Assistant in Chelsea, Massachusetts

The state operated Veterans Home at Chelsea is an independent state agency consisting of long-term care and a domiciliary which are independent living quarters for our veterans. The care and services provided by the Veterans Homes are supported by an extraordinary group of staff working to meet the needs of our veterans. The ideal incumbent's role as the Occupational Assistant role will be to provide occupational rehabilitation services to maximize independent function, enhance development, and prevent disability to the residents of the Veterans Home at Chelsea. Trains and monitors residents in occupational therapy-related activities. DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Works under the direction of a licensed OT, providing direct and indirect treatment to residents as indicated. 2. Assists the OT in assessing veteran’s functional abilities and developing individualizedtreatment plans. 3. Implements therapeutic activities and exercises to help residents improve mobility, strength, coordination, and independence in activities of daily living (ADLs) such as eating, grooming, dressing, and bathing. 4. Guides residents through therapeutic exercises and activities, providing hands-on assistance andencouragement as needed. 5. Trains and monitors residents and staff in occupational therapy-related activities, including appropriate set up, maintenance, and use of therapeutic/adaptive equipment, including orthotics and other assistive devices. 6. Documents all occupational therapy-related services according to facility policy and reports observations to the supervising OT. 7. Educates residents, families, and caregivers on adaptive techniques/strategies to promote independence and safety in daily activities. 8. Maintains a clean and safe treatment environment including proper storage and organization of equipmentand supplies. 9. Participates in team meetings and continuing education opportunities for professional growth and to stayupdated on best practices in occupational therapy and long-term care. 10. Coordinates with other disciplines to assure optimal care, including attendance at interdisciplinary meetings. 11. Understands and supports departmental goals and objectives. 12. Adheres to the Occupational Therapy Association Code of Ethics and Guide for Professional Conduct. 13. Supports the supervising OT in the establishment or revision of policies, procedures, and standards. 14. *May provide training to applicable students. *QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED AT HIRE: 1. *Knowledge of the science, theory, principles, and terminology associated with the practice of occupational therapy. *2. *Knowledge of occupational therapy evaluation skills, treatment principles and techniques, preferably in skilled nursing and long-term care facility settings. *3. *Ability to understand, explain, and apply the policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines governing occupational therapy and rehabilitation activities. *4. *Ability to use sound clinical judgement. *5. *Ability to communicate effectively using good interpersonal skills. *6. *Ability to work alongside the supervising OT cooperatively and openly and receive feedback on performance. *7. Ability to motivate and establish a rapport with residents. 8. Ability to maintain accurate records and to prepare general reports.
