Overview

Chronic pain is a major public health problem, affecting about a quarter of adults in the United States. For individuals with severe chronic pain that is not adequately treated with other treatments, opioid medications may needed. Given the risks of opioids, including opioid use disorder (addiction) and overdose, clinical guidelines for treating severe chronic pain are in a state of transition. Buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist which is used primarily for treatment of opioid use disorder, is increasingly used to treat chronic pain in individuals who do not have opioid use disorder. However, there are implementation challenges that need to be understood and addressed to optimize how buprenorphine is used for chronic pain in the absence of opioid use disorder. BupSCRIPT is a qualitative research study. We are conducting 1:1 interviews with clinicians, health care administrators, and patients to understand the many factors that influence buprenorphine use for chronic pain, to then develop an implementation strategy to optimize its use.
