Job Summary

The Department of Chemistry encourages applications for a Temporary Lab Support Coordinator! This role is entrusted with a variety of critical tasks including the preparation of solutions and reagents, maintenance of equipment and instruments, and the distribution of materials required for student experiments. Additionally, the role involves the decontamination of glassware and equipment, as well as the enforcement of safety policies within the laboratory environment. The technician will also be responsible for packaging and labeling chemical wastes in preparation for disposal. A key part of the role includes the creation and maintenance of efficient record-keeping systems, ensuring that all activities and materials are accurately detailed and managed. This position demands a highly organized individual with a keen attention to detail and a strong dedication to safety and procedural compliance.

Who We Are

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Colorado Boulder emphasizes knowledge of the basic principles of chemistry, including atomic and molecular theory, the states of matter and reactivities and properties of chemical substances. Students study the basic subfields of chemistry, such as organic, physical, analytical, and inorganic chemistry, all while developing the mathematical skills to understand fundamental chemical relationships and to manipulate experimental data. Graduates also learn safe chemical practices, including handling waste, safety equipment, assembling chemical apparatus and crafting experiments.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

  • Prepare chemical solutions and reagents for use in experiments.

  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including colorimeters, conductivity meters, pH meters, heat blocks, centrifuges, and temperature probes.

  • Maintain and distribute chemicals, equipment, and instruments to lab rooms.

  • Hazardous waste disposal.

  • Implement and adhere to laboratory safety protocols and standard operation procedures. Enforces safety policies.

  • Assist in the inventory management of laboratory supplies and chemicals.

  • Implement quality control measures to ensure reliability and accuracy of equipment.

  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment to facilitate efficient workflow and safety.

  • Coordinating and maintaining digital records which include training documentation, safety documentation, data entry, and other documents/files that ensure the lab operates efficiently.

What You Should Know

  • This is a temporary, full-time position anticipated to last 9 months working in person. There is potential for this role to transition into a regular University staff role.

  • The schedule will operate as follows:

  • Friday 10:30am 6:30pm

  • Thursday 7:30am 5:30pm

  • Wednesday 10:30am 6:30pm

  • Tuesday 7:30am 5:30pm

  • Monday 9:30am 6:30pm

What We Can Offer

The hiring rate for this position is $18 per hour.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) in Chemistry or related science field. Experience can substitute for the degree on a year for year basis.
