Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a temporary Tree Trimmer to join our Planning, Engineering and Construction team. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. What does a Tree Trimmer do for us ?
They perform journeyman level utility vegetation management activities as part of Idaho Power Company’s vegetation management program. They operate Idaho Power Company owned equipment. They prune trees by climbing and bucket/lift methods near energized power lines and on customers’ private property. They provide leadership and training for the Vegetation Management Groundman.
A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
Knowledge of:
Accepted industry practices for trimming trees near electric power lines
Directional tree pruning techniques as generally described in ANSI A300
Tree physiology and biology
Theory and operation of electric utility distribution systems and associated devices
Power line easement and right-of-way policies
Safety requirements for working around energized power lines
The equipment, tools, and methods used in trimming trees near power lines
Skills in:
Basic use of personal computers
Good interpersonal communications
Journeyman-level skills to prune and remove trees as part of a utility vegetation management program complying with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and industry standards including operation of all associated materials, tools and equipment
Ability to:
Ability to work 8–10-hour days in a very physically demanding role while maintaining positive attitude and strong work ethic
Develop and maintain effective working relationships with other members of a work team
Maintain neat, accurate, and legible records
Respond to emergencies in excess of normal working hours
Work overtime at the discretion of the supervisor
Work independently in a self-directed manner
Work outside in inclement weather
Operate hand and power tools, vehicles, and large wood processing equipment along with performing journeyman level tree pruning and removal activities while complying with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and industry standards
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- High School diploma or GED
Experience:
- 3 years of general work experience that includes physical labor experience, including 2 years of arboriculture or tree trimming experience
Preferred:
- 2 years of utility vegetation management experience that includes hands on experience in a tree trimming role
Licenses & Certifications:
Valid Class A CDL
Driver's license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
Valid DOT (Department of Transportation) Medical Card or ability to obtain prior to hire
Electrical Hazard Awareness certification (or equivalent)
Possess or obtain within one year of hire date ISA Arborist certification (or equivalent)
Possess or obtain Electrical Hazard Awareness certification prior to hire
Must have completed federally recognized journeyman utility vegetation management apprenticeship program
Must obtain First Aid/CPR card within 90 days and maintain vegetation management certifications
Preferred:
Applicable chemical applicator’s license
ISA Utility Specialist in Arboriculture
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the ability to walk on uneven terrain while carrying chainsaw, pruning equipment, and laptop. Must be able to occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Must be able to push and pull up to 50 pounds. Sustained awkward postures with crouching, kneeling, bending/stooping, and twisting is required in performing manual dexterity activities, gripping, pushing, pulling, and using hand tools. Must be able to operate 2- and 4-wheel drive vehicles, UTVs, and ATVs. This job also involves frequently climbing 50 ft. and lower rarely climbing over 50ft., while carrying 40 lbs. gear. To ensure the manufacturer's rated capacity of climbing hooks, ladders, and aerial equipment are not exceeded, applicants body weight cannot exceed 300 lbs. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Operates as part of a crew with supporting the Vegetation Management Groundman and Foreman. Involves travel with overnight stays.
Temporary employees are eligible to apply for internal job postings.
