Our Ground & Water Team in the Midlands is looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Technical Director to take on the role of Regional Lead for the Midlands.

We require a team player with the leadership, technical and commercial skills, knowledge and experience to take overall responsibility of a region including oversight of capture and delivery of projects, ensuring technical quality and adherence to budget and programme, to manage and mentor staff.

The Regional Lead will be responsible for the following:

  1. Health & Safety – Oversight of Health & Safety and wellbeing of staff within your region and ensuring that Health & Safety communications are communicated.

  2. Business development – You will be responsible for supporting the sector leads and pushing forward the established business development plan within your region. Your role will include liaison with new and potential clients; both internal and external to WSP.

  3. Project Director for projects within your region and nationally. This includes selecting a suitably qualified team for the project, supporting with proposal development and issue and also project direction throughout the lifecycle of the project including monthly financial reviews with the project managers.

  4. Commercial – Tracking and reviewing the commercial performance for your region to ensure that KPI’s are met. Reporting up to the Commercial Operations Director in detail and to the other Senior Leadership Team on a high level.

  5. Operations – The appointed person will form part of Senior Leadership Team formed of five regions reporting to the Ground & Water Service Line Director. You will be responsible for ensuring that your region works in conjunction with other regions supporting a ‘One National Team’ approach. This includes:

  • Oversight of weekly resourcing and ensuring that this is communicated to the national resourcing manager.

  • Supporting the integration of teams.

  • Weekly communications including acting as the main point of flow of communications from higher management.

  • Ensuring that company messaging has been received by the team.(as required)

  • Technical support on projects within your area of expertise. This includes authorisations of deliverables.

  1. People Management – Monthly visits to all offices within your region (currently Birmingham, Nottingham and Shrewsbury), mentoring and supporting team members to progress their careers.
  • A minimum of a strong undergraduate degree in an environmental, science or engineering based subject, be chartered with a relevant UK institution, and be able to travel within the UK and internationally to support projects

  • A relevant post-graduate qualification (advantageous, although not essential)

  • Has a broad range of demonstrable experience with evidence of the skills needed to successfully deliver this role

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a track record of growing teams and businesses.

  • Is proactive, self-motivated and will support and develop the existing team.

  • Leads input to team and client meetings, being prepared to own decisions and put forward alternative ideas and concepts.

  • Provides oversight, technical leadership and verification of project deliverables.

  • Has experience working on large or complex multi-disciplinary schemes in Development / Infrastructure, Rail or Energy.

  • Has a track record of BD, both inputting to multi-disciplinary proposals and externally.

  • Client management / winning repeat work.

  • Has a full UK driving licence (or equivalent) – this is essential to the role.

  • Has excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).

  • Has the ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.

  • Has the ability to ensure delivery on time and at the right quality, demonstrating attention to detail.

  • Has self-awareness and understands their own limitations.

  • Is able to effectively manage time.

  • Has a strong work ethic.

  • Can build rapport and relationships with peers.

  • Can build trust and sustainable support network.
