Master’s degree and preferably a PhD in Structural/Civil Engineering.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ROLE:

The vulnerability modeler will be part of Impact Forecasting vulnerability team focused on the development of vulnerability solutions for atmospheric perils. The role responsibilities include, but are not limited to development, calibration and validation of wind vulnerability functions, detailed claims analysis etc.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :

Research

  • Conduct in-depth research on wind\flood vulnerability specific to industrial facilities.

  • Find, create, and analyze important data sets.

  • Stay informed about industry practices, codes, and standards.

  • Collaborate with experts to enhance understanding of wind-related risks.

  • Contribute to the development of technical documentation and other reports.

    Vulnerability Function Development

  • Create component-based vulnerability functions (using computer simulations or claims).

  • Create vulnerability functions from fragility functions.

    Model Calibration and Validation

  • Calibrate vulnerability models based on wind or flood damage reports.

  • Collaborate with hazard and GIS specialists to investigate model anomalies.

  • Validate model performance using historical events.

  • Ensure sufficient accuracy in predicting damage levels.

    Exposure Analysis

  • Analyze exposure data for industrial assets.

  • Identify important assets, regional trends, etc.

    Claims Analysis

  • Investigate claims data related to wind/flood damage.

  • Identify patterns, trends, and loss ratios in industrial losses.

    ELEMENTS

  • Utilize proprietary loss modeling platform ELEMENTS for estimating losses.

  • Collaborate with software development teams to implement methodologies.

  • Communicate modeling results effectively to internal stakeholders and clients.

    Skills And Knowledge

  • Proficiency in structural analysis, load calculations, and understanding of building codes.

  • Ability to assess structural vulnerabilities related to different loads.

  • Familiarity with finite element analysis (FEA) software.

  • Strong quantitative skills for developing vulnerability functions.

  • Experience with statistical modeling, probability distributions and Monte Carlo simulations.

  • Knowledge of loss estimation methodologies.

  • Excellent technical writing skills for reports and publications.

  • Ability to communicate complex findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Collaborative mindset for working with cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to handle, process and visualize large datasets.

  • Programming: Python, R, MATLAB, Octave (any)

  • Database: SQL
