Amentum Vehicle Maintenance Technician - Light Wheel Tire Specialist in Baghdad, Iraq

The Vehicle Maintenance Technician - Light Wheel Tire Specialist will be based at one of three Amentum sites in Iraq and serve the Operations and Maintenance Support Services (OMSS) contract in support of the U.S. Department of State. This position is responsible for performing skilled and specialized automotive tire work in the repair, maintenance, and replacement of tires on buses, support vehicles, trucks, trailers, heavy equipment and other motorized equipment. Position mounts/demounts tires, ensures conformance to industry standards, examines and repairs tires, performs preventative maintenance on the tires and responds to emergency road calls. Position also inventories and requisitions supplies and prepares paperwork. Position may be required to work evenings, nights and will report to the Vehicle Maintenance Shop Supervision. The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all inclusive.

DUTIES:

  • Responsible for maintaining a safe workplace and ensuring that safety is the highest priority in the workplace.

  • Comply with all Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance requirements and goals. Provide information and materials to these divisions as necessary to ensure adequate and legal documentation.

  • Properly complete the services and/or repairs for which the Technician is assigned by management or their designated representative. Produce quality work that evidence pride of workmanship.

  • Retrieve cars from designated parking areas and return to the designated pick-up area when repairs are completed. Follow key control procedures.

  • Prepares tires for installation; mounts and demounts tires on rims and vehicles; and fills tires to the proper air pressure.

  • Inspects and tests tires to ensure conformance to standards.

  • Inform the Shop Lead or Supervisor of difficulties with repairs and the need for additional repairs.

  • Comply with manufacturer specifications throughout the repair/servicing process.

  • Practice safe work habits and use personal protective equipment as required.

  • Report to Lead or Supervisor any situation or condition that jeopardizes the safety, welfare, or integrity of the shop, its personnel, or customers.

  • Mentor and help other technicians on the Service Team.

  • Examines and probes damaged, defective, or flat tires to determine the extent of damage and the feasibility of repair; and recommends the disposal of non-repairable tires.

  • Repairs tube and tubeless tires by puncturing blisters, applying patches, removing nails, changing tubes, installing wheel O-Rings, etc.

  • Road tests vehicles after repairs are completed.

  • Aligns and balances wheels and tire assemblies to minimize wear on tires; and rotates wheels at prescribed mileage intervals.

  • Performs preventative maintenance checks on vehicle tires and related components.

  • Responds to emergency road calls; performs road service to repair/replace damaged tires and operates a service truck to service tires in the field.

  • Operates and maintains diagnostic equipment, hand/power tools, tire changing machines, balancing equipment, and other specialized automotive tools and machinery.

  • Practices safety methods in the operation of equipment and performance of duties.

  • Inventories and ensures an adequate supply of tires and related parts; and requisitions/orders supplies as necessary.

  • Prepares paperwork including work orders, part usage records, tire weight records, etc.

  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.

  • Maintain service logs and records of maintenance on vehicles and motorized equipment.

  • Keep tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.

  • Assist in training workers in automotive tire changing techniques, as needed.

  • Road tests vehicles to verify problems if required and to verify repairs done to vehicle.

  • Complete records, maintain tools and equipment, and perform various clean-up activities.

  • Observe and follows all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment.

  • Abide by company policy and departmental best practices and procedures.

  • Perform additional duties and projects as assigned.

REQUIRED:

  • Minimum Acceptable Experience Level: 2 - 7 years’ work experience working with tires.

  • Tire repair & replacement Certifications preferred.

  • Experience with run flat inserts (Runflat International, Hutchinson)

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of automotive tire repairs and maintenance.

  • Ability to follow directions and communicate with staff and co-workers.

  • Able to use diagnostic TMPS systems, technical software and manufacturers’ diagnostic equipment as required.

  • Must read, interpret and transcribe data in order to maintain accurate records.

  • The ability to work independently with limited supervision and the motivation to continually increase technical skills should be evident.

  • Handle customer vehicles with care, keep them clean and take precautions to protect all customer vehicles while at the shop.

  • Ability to lift tires and equipment.

  • Education: Must possess a high school diploma (GED), trade, or vocational courses in automotive mechanics and considerable experience in the repair, maintenance, and replacement of standard/large vehicle tires; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the noted knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Passport, Licenses and Certifications:

  • As part of pre-contingency requirements, by the time the visa process starts , candidates must possess a valid passport of home country with a minimum of 18 months remaining to expiration date with 8 blank pages.

  • Valid drivers’ and truck drivers’ licenses from Home of Record.

  • Tech school/training completion certificate preferred.

  • Security Vetting: Already possess an active DoD or DoS Secret clearance or be able to obtain a favorable Secret clearance prior to being hired. Must maintain eligibility for the duration of the contract.

  • Language Skills: Satisfactory English proficiency to meet job requirements and to adhere and comply with safety, health, and security measures.

  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

  • Medical: Successfully complete and pass the medical and dental examinations as required by Amentum and our customer for deployment to Iraq. Must maintain physical and dental requirements for duration of deployment.

DESIRED:

  • Relevant overseas tire and automotive mechanical experience.

  • Previous out of home country experience and previous work experience in harsh environmental conditions are a plus.

  • Experience working with Amentum.

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of principles and processes involved in supporting automotive mechanical functions at an overseas facility.

  • Experience providing excellent customer services.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment that requires handling multiple tasks at a given time and rapidly adapting to changing priorities and schedules.

  • Cross-cultural sensitivity with an international perspective.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Computer skills, specifically in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook & Adobe

  • Expert communication skills to facilitate and disseminate information.

WORKING AND LIVING CONDITIONS:

This position may be located in a war zone, in an environment with harsh and dangerous working and living conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may regularly be exposed to extreme and austere desert-like environment. Temperatures can reach 120- 130 degrees Fahrenheit/50- 55 degrees Celsius during the summer months. Employees must be willing and able to perform regular job requirements in this austere, extreme environment, as well as willing and able to deploy to Iraq for extended periods. Work schedules are a minimum of 6 days per week and 10 hours per day, while some jobs have higher daily and weekly minimums. Employees must be willing and able to perform physical activities including, but not limited to, heavy lifting and moving of items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum; climbing in and out of equipment; crawling; and working outdoors. This includes being able to lift and carry 40 pounds of personal protective equipment for extended periods of time and being capable of running and ‘duck & cover’ during emergencies without putting oneself or others at risk.
