Minimum Qualifications

Substation Electrician I:

Education and/or Equivalent Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus one (1) year experience in a related field

  • Thirty semester hours of college credit in power technology, electronics, communications technology, industrial technology or related field may substitute for one year of the general required experience with a minimum substitution of one year.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Valid Texas Class A Commercial Drivers License or ability to acquire license and/or endorsements within 90 days of employment.

  • Ability to produce and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in confined areas.

  • Ability to learn principles of electrical theory as applied to transformers/ switches, etc. for hook-ups.

Substation Electrician II:

Education and/or Equivalent Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years experience in maintenance or modification of electrical substations.

  • Thirty semester hours of college credit in power technology, electronics, communications technology, industrial technology or related field may substitute for one year of the general required experience with a minimum substitution of one year.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Valid Texas Class A Commercial Drivers License or ability to acquire license and/or endorsements within 90 days of employment.

  • Ability to produce and maintain an acceptable driving record.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in confined areas

  • Ability to work under emergency and all weather conditions.

    Position Description:

The Substation Electrician (SE) will be part of the Substation Maintenance group and will report to the Substation Maintenance Supervisor. The SE will be working in high voltage substations ranging from 69kV – 345kV. The SE will safely assist in the installation, modification, and repairs of Austin Energy’s high voltage substations. The SE will be available for scheduled, unscheduled, and call back work. The SE will also be available for rotational on-call stand by and follow all safety procedures and policies.

This position will be filled at either the Substation Electrician I or II level, depending upon candidate qualifications.

Note:

Top Candidates will need to complete both a written and field level test at the experience level they are hired in at, before their 6 month probation period ends. Failure to pass the test will result in termination

Driving Requirement:

This position requires a Valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver License with Tanker endorsement or the ability to acquire one within 90 days of employment. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

Work Schedule:

  • This position is categorized as Essential Personnel with the City of Austin. Essential staff are required to work during emergencies or bad weather if they are scheduled to work and, in some cases, when they are not scheduled. Essential employees ensure the continuance of key operations for the City of Austin.

  • Work hours may include after hours, holidays, and weekends.

  • Shifts may change according to departmental needs.

  • Employee may be required to work additional hours outside of regular work schedule.

This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.

This position is considered “essential” which will require work outside of normal business hours including evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.
