The Department of Environmental Protection, Office of the Commissioner, is seeking to fill an Enforcement Specialist (Public Service Coordinator I) vacancy in Augusta, Maine.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:The Enforcement Specialist is part of the Department of Environmental Protection’s Policy Unit, which focuses on oversight and implementation of the agency’s core regulatory programs and managing special projects of significant policy importance or broad application throughout DEP. The Enforcement Specialist is responsible for coordinating enforcement activities across the agency and reviewing and drafting documentation for enforcement of laws and rules. This position works closely with representatives of Maine’s Office of the Attorney General, provides guidance to DEP staff on statutory and regulatory interpretation, presents enforcement cases to the Board of Environmental Protection, and represents the agency in Maine District Court under Rule 80K of Maine’s Rules of Civil Procedure. This position is also responsible for ensuring DEP meets U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requirements for enforcement of delegated federal programs. This position reports to the Policy Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Applicants must have a legal education and Maine Bar admission -OR- Bar admission in another state and qualified for admission by motion.

Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills and/or experience:

  • Experience implementing environmental regulatory programs at the federal, state, or local level.

  • Experience litigating in Maine Courts.

  • Strong legal writing and public speaking skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with technical staff, administrative officials, and the public.
