QTS’ Distinguished Network Engineer is responsible for large scale, enterprise-wide network engineering support and plays a critical SME role in designing, implementing, and maintaining an organization’s network infrastructure.
RESPONSIBILITIES, other duties may be assigned.
Lead the strategy and implementation of technologies for the company (not just network related), supporting the CTO, VP of Strategic Technology Initiatives, and VP of Technology Engineering & Operations.
Represent the CTO organization at the enterprise level
Provide frequent and detailed technical advice to the Network Engineering organization and OSC.
Lead RFO follow-ups to assist with customer support and maintain awareness of technical shortcomings that need to be corrected.
Provide network SME support for sales teams, including remote and in-person meetings with prospects and customers.
Assist product development with network product designs and specifications. Help QTS stay ahead of capacity, security, and vendor EOS/EOL concerns.
Design and implement network infrastructure
Install and configure network hardware, including routers, switches, firewalls, and other network devices to ensure optimal network performance
Own the monitoring of network performance
Address both hardware and software problems to minimize network downtime
Collaborate with IT professionals to implement security protocols to protect the network from threats
Conduct regular network maintenance, to include updating software and hardware to maintain network integrity
Document network configurations and detailed records of network processes/procedures for transparency and continuity
Provide support and training, mentor network engineer team to build a culture excellence.
Stay up to date with the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
10+ years of experience in network engineering or administration roles.
Proven experience with large complex networks, capacity planning, network security principles, and industry network management best practices.
Proficiency in using network diagnostic, monitoring, and analysis tools.
Solid understanding of networking protocols (e.g., TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF).
Experience with a variety of network operating systems including Juniper, Palo Alto and Cisco IOS.
Top-level expert in all aspects of Networking technology and operations. Additionally, have broad knowledge of current and emerging technologies that affect the business.
Extensive knowledge of the following protocols:
IGRP (Interior Gateway Routing Protocol): A Cisco proprietary protocol used in small to medium-sized networks.
EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol): A Cisco proprietary protocol that is more efficient and scalable than IGRP.
OSPF (Open Shortest Path First): A widely used, link-state routing protocol that scales well in large and complex enterprise networks.
IS-IS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System): Like OSPF, used for routing within an autonomous system.
BGP (Border Gateway Protocol): The protocol used for routing between autonomous systems on the internet, essential for network engineers managing ISP or large enterprise networks1.
RIP (Routing Information Protocol): One of the oldest routing protocols, used in small, homogeneous networks.
Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Strong troubleshooting and critical thinking skills.
Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
Leadership and mentoring skills to guide junior team members.
Creative thinker and problem solver, able to distill complex problems down to actionable, practical solutions. Ability to solve any networking problem as the escalation of last resort.
Excellent communication and diplomatic skills. Strong ability to influence through logic and experience rather than organizational authority.
