Summary
The Xi Laboratory at the University of Michigan is part of the Sate of Michigan SARS-CoV-2 Epidemiology Wastewater Evaluation and Reporting Network (SEWER) to monitor SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. We are currently focused on processing samples from several Buildings on and off the university campuses as part of the larger SEWER network for a streamlined spatially robust monitoring network covering much of the state of Michigan. The Xi laboratory is looking to bring on a full time research laboratory technician to support different aspects of work in the lab. Work will be conducted at the School of Public Health. The primary role of these positions will be lab-based, focused on sample collection, sample processing and analysis using molecular techniques, and data reporting. Duties require molecular lab experience and an ability to work well with others. This a one-year term position renewable based upon funding availability.
Responsibilities*
Sample collection, processing, lab management, and lab maintenance: The primary responsibility of this position is to collect sewage samples, extract, concentrate and quantify wastewater samples for SARS-CoV-2 quantification, analyze and report raw data. Other duties include performing monthly lab inspections, oversee undergraduates in basic lab maintenance tasks and lab safety, and be responsible for ordering research and laboratory supplies and maintaining appropriate databases.
Lab meetings and communication of results: The Xi research team has a weekly lab meeting to discuss sample processing and future directions. The applicant will be expected to communicate results to our group, and aid in other public outreach efforts.
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's Degree in microbiology, environmental science and engineering, epidemiology, or chemistry, etc. with significant wet lab experience, including molecular methods. 1-2 years related experience.
Willingness to work as part of a team.
Must be able to meet the requirements to drive a University of Michigan vehicle.
Desired Qualifications*
Master's degree in the above-mentioned disciplines.
This position seeks candidates with molecular lab experience.
Experience working with environmental samples and trouble-shooting skills.
Some flexibility with working hours--time for sample collection may vary from location to location.
