The USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is accepting applications for a Clinical Pharmacy Technician (CPT) to support medication management services for the Virtual Pharmacist Care Center (VPCC). The candidate will support telephonic and/or video-telehealth services to various populations served through USC School of Pharmacy partnerships. This includes a blend of Medication Therapy Management (MTM) and Comprehensive Medication Management (CMM) along with other patient care activities.

Essential Functions:

The CPT will be trained to perform the following duties:

  • Clinical Responsibilities: Support pharmacist provision of telephonic and/or video-telehealth medication management services. Examples include but are not limited to MTM, medication adherence, statin initiation, alternative therapy, transitions of care, and CMM for common ambulatory care conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, asthma, COPD, thromboembolic disorders, heart failure, transitions of care, smoking cessation).

  • Collect information for patient encounters (e.g. allergy history, medication history, SMBGs, SMBPs)

  • Contact patients using audio or video technology, often times cold calling, to reconcile medication lists, collect allergy and medical conditions, as well as obtain other pertinent information

  • Contact medical providers, nurses, health educators, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to support the provision of medication management services

  • Administrative / Clerical Duties:

  • Patient Recruitment: Provide education to qualified patients about the service and potential benefits

  • Schedule initial and follow-up encounters

  • Mail hard copy summary of medication management visits to patients

  • Mail or fax copy of summary of medication management visits to prescribing provider(s) and dispensing community pharmacy

  • Maintain performance standards including call volume consistent with other pharmacy technicians

  • Perform other duties as required by supervisor

Secondary Functions:

  • Coordinates program services and/or activates. Schedules classes, meetings and/or events. Provides leadership and guidance for student workers and/or volunteers.

  • Ensures satisfactory follow through on assigned areas of responsibility.

  • Communicates effectively with patients.

  • Coordinates production and distribution of program materials including meeting agendas, reports, informational materials, marketing materials, etc.

  • Researches and gathers information for program purposes which may include: program effectiveness, client needs assessment, etc.

  • Conducts preliminary analysis of data. Submits recommendations and prepares reports, as assigned.

  • Provides client services by responding to inquiries and requests for information regarding specific program functions.

  • Coordinates program services with other offices and staff on campus. Serves as a resource for program information. Represents program on university committees as requested.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

  • Complies appropriate medical and medication information from patient or patient’s medical records, determines billing procedures, patient benefits and eligibility.

  • Prepares and maintains general patient records in conformity with state and federal regulations.

  • Assists in promoting special health programs that enhance and encourage good health, such as blood pressure monitoring and diabetes testing programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current CA Pharmacy Technician License

  • Comfortable communicating with patients via telephone and/or video technology

  • Proficient in basic Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least two years of experience as a pharmacy technician

  • Experience in supporting clinical pharmacy services

  • Spanish Fluency

  • Fluency in additional languages

This position will have a direct report to the Director of Population Health.

The hourly rate range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00.
