Role description:

Arcadis is seeking a System Operator to join our team in the Capital and Southern Adirondacks Region of New York.

The Systems Operator will assist project sites throughout the region with active operations and maintenance wastewater and water treatment systems, and other remedial treatment systems, environmental monitoring, waste coordination, and subcontractor oversight.

The ideal candidate has previous experience in operating, maintenance, and troubleshoot treatment systems (includes but not limited to: Mixers, oil/water separators, waste transfer pumps, holding tanks, cooling towers, filters, power and control panels, recorders, feeders, proportioning pumps, chemicals and slurries, chemical testing equipment such as pH meters, color test and settling agents, beakers, titration apparatus, material handling equipment, chemical and sludge waste barrels, clarifiers, polymer feed modules, filter press, sludge dryer, pH/ORP control equipment, groundwater remediation equipment such as well pumps, level/flow controls, stripping tower, blowers, vapor phase control unit, media filters, baghouse filter, gauges, sensors, safety equipment, clothing and hand tools) of all complexity, and an aptitude for mechanical and electrical problem solving.

Role accountabilities:

Performs remedial system O& M, troubleshooting, optimization, and monitoring/sampling activities including but not limited to:

  • Ensuring that Health and Safety is the number one priority by complying with all safe work practices, policies, and processes and always acting in a safe manner and controlled manner.
  • Assures integrity, cleanliness, and security of system buildings/enclosure and equipment.
  • Ensure all activities are being performed in accordance with our Quality Management System.
  • Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, repair, and adjust treatment plant machinery and equipment including pumps, valves, motors, meters, tanks, reservoirs, feeders, and other equipment to ensure system is operating at optimal operation for the established metrics including Municipal, State, and Federal codes for environmental protection of waterways and air quality.
  • Provide prompt communication to project management team when equipment is not safe and/or functioning at optimal performance to meet project objectives.
  • Performs system preventative maintenance procedures and checks.
  • Implement immediate corrective actions when an alarm is triggered or system data indicates a potential safety, operational or compliance issue.
  • Review and evaluate operational data and provide recommendations for improving system performance to meet system objectives
  • Collects system samples according to established permit and operational requirements.
  • Calibrates and maintains controllers, electrodes, flow and control equipment. Determine and prepare appropriate ratios of chemical mixes for batch treatments (where applicable).
  • Installs, maintains, and performs data download from a host of smart telemetry devices internet of things (IOT).
  • Oversee subcontractors to perform selected operation, maintenance/repair of systems, preventative maintenance, and monitoring in accordance with Health and Safety requirements.
  • Record all project observations, readings, and activities as required for regulatory, client, and safety record keeping requirements in a timely Manner (Using electronic, field books, tablets, or paper forms).

Ideal Candidate will be:
  • Mechanically inclined with experience operating and troubleshooting tools and equipment.
  • Ability to read and have general understand of mechanical, electrical, and controls drawings.
  • Effective time management, maintain high level of productivity, accuracy completes work in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Ability to work with diverse people and skill sets, ability to work with others in a professional team environment, as well as independently.
  • Adapts to changing work environments, work priorities, and organizational needs.
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills.
  • Sound judgement to make good decisions benefiting the project and the client.
  • Shows concerns for all aspects of the job, follows up on work outputs and takes personal responsibility for job performance.
  • Ability and desire to collect, review and analyze data on electronically enabled devices (i.e. cell phones, tablets, laptop etc.).

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualifications:
  • 2 years of mechanical system O& M experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Wastewater or environmental water treatment system experience
  • Wastewater or water license certification
  • 40 Hour HAZWOPER training
  • Confined Space Entry training
  • Behavioral-Based Safety training
  • Knowledge of Programable logic controllers
  • RCRA hazardous waste and DOT waste handling training
