Our Mission is to perpetuate the wildlife resources of the state, to provide a quality state parks system, and to provide enjoyable and sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities that educate and inspire current and future generations to serve as active stewards of Colorado's natural resources.

The Branding and Communications Section exists to lead the planning, development, creation, implementation and evaluation of creative methods and communications techniques to efficiently communicate CPW programs, products and activities to local, regional and national publics based upon CPW leadership goals. The work unit is responsible for communicating with the public using the agency website, press releases, social media, regulation brochure publications, mass marketing efforts, video, and Colorado Outdoors Magazine and blog. The work unit is also responsible for pricing, production and distribution of these materials. The work unit is also responsible for overseeing the CPW retail operations, including the online store.

Description of Job

The purpose of this position is to support accessible content creation and management for the agency, including developing best practices and training for staff involved in creating materials for the public. This includes working with web staff to ensure external website standards are being met, review and proposed updates for internal-facing intranet sites, review of email and print templates, style guides, etc. created by the Branding and Communications section for meeting accessibility standards to be used agency-wide. The accessibility specialist will be the “first line” for complaints or requests for remediation for users of CPW products. The position will also play a role in remediating key documents stored on the agency’s digital asset management platform, and serve as a DAM lead in ensuring proper tagging and taxonomy for use throughout the agency.

Managing Digital Communications Assets for Accessibility

Manage CPW’s digital accessibility efforts with a focus on ensuring that both public facing and internal tactics are developed with accessibility in mind.

  • Be CPW SME for carrying forward any updates/changes to state and federal standards and working with designers and program managers to make updates where necessary

  • Review existing CPW branded templates for email, power point, letterhead, etc. to ensure they are designed and maintained for state and federal accessibility standards

  • Work with web team and business operations to ensure team and vendors are aware of and implementing updates and needs for accessibility

  • Work with Communications Supervisor to help manage agency’s digital asset management system and imported content with the goal of providing consistently accessible, reliable and understandable digital information for the Department.

  • Support Branding and Communications Manager in providing pertinent information to staff and reviewing larger-scale materials (SCORP, Gray Wolf Management Plan, etc) for accessibility standards as needed

  • Provide communications and social media content to support accessibility program.

Training and Support for Accessibility Program

Coordinates, builds relationships with, educates and communicates with a variety of CPW staff to ensure that agency programs and products incorporate accessibility into all content creation using tools and systems in use at CPW (digital and general business suites). Work with Tech/Business operations to ensure program leads/employees developing new digital projects (apps, databases, etc.) that may include a public component do so with accessibility in mind. Working to solve accessibility challenges both in and outside of the Branding and Communications Section with a goal of proposing/providing solutions

Coordination with DNR, OIT and other focused accessibility programs

Will attend DNR Accessibility Program and OIT Technology Accessibility Team (TAP) meetings; web content editors meetings, and delivers web and other digital communications accessibility training. First point of review/remediation for complaints from the public regarding agency materials.

Work with Business Operations as a liaison and SME to ensure CPW systems meet accessibility standards. This includes vendor hosted applications as well as internal applications and systems supported by OIT and CPW staff.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications

Six (6) years of professional experience in in accessibility, communications, technology or digital media or an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.

OR

At least two (2) years of professional experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.

AND

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Communications, Computer Science, Information Systems, Educational or Assistive Technology, Graphic Design or Marketing or a field of study related to the work assignment.

Substitutions

  • Additional appropriate education will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current or former State experience relevant to this position

  • Current or former Colorado Parks & Wildlife work or volunteer experience

  • Experience working in a government role

  • High level of written and oral communications

  • Prior experience working with technology in a communications, marketing or web management role

  • Understanding of WCAG 2.1 AA and other common accessibility standards and platforms
